The Covenants of the Bible

DAY 2 OF 5

The history of the covenants

In the beginning, God created Adam, breathed into him the breath of life, and put him in charge of all creation. At that time, God was dwelling with His creation. As Adam and Eve were in the garden, God told Adam not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for if they did, they would surely die.

The serpent (Satan) deceived Eve by saying that if they ate from it, they wouldn’t die, but they would be more like God, knowing both good and evil. Eve, believing the serpent’s lie, brought the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil to Adam. Adam broke his covenant with God by sinning against Him. This sin meant separation from God, the source of life, resulting in death. God was forced to leave because of this sin. Without God there, all creation that Adam has been in charge of was overtaken by the enemy.

God wants to dwell with his people. At the time of Noah, God tried to recreate His kingdom and people on earth. He appointed Noah to build an ark so he could escape the flood God promised would judge the world of Adam’s descendants who had been corrupted by God’s enemy. But there were only 8 people from Noah’s family who boarded the ark. Although they were saved, was everything perfect from that point? No, Noah’s family continued to go astray because of the enemy’s influence.

After these losses, God chose a man named Abram from among Noah’s descendants and tested him to see if he would remain faithful and obey Him. After seeing Abram’s faith, God renamed him Abraham and promised a covenant that would be fulfilled through Abraham’s descendants.
