Encounter

DAY 1 OF 4

Encountering the Holy Spirit

In the New Testament, we see disciples encountering the Holy Spirit, God with us. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He is God and lives in us. From the time of the New Testament onwards, the infilling of the Holy Spirit results from what Jesus did on the cross. We can now encounter the presence of God in our lives, infilling us, equipping us, guiding us, and convicting us of sin; as disciples, we are called to walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).

What will God do when you press in for a fresh encounter with the Holy Spirit? Will you take up the call in this devotional to encounter the power of the Holy Spirit afresh? I want to ask you, throughout these next 4 days to practice asking and making room for the Holy Spirit to help you.

Let's review some facts about the Holy Spirit, found in John 14:15-18, to know who we encounter in these moments.

The Holy Spirit is a person, our Helper

When we encounter the Holy Spirit, we must remember that we are encountering a person and the power of God. However, he is not just a force there for our use but a person we have a relationship with. He is like a dove, like wind, like fire, yet he is a person. When we encounter the presence of the Holy Spirit, he changes us, equips us, sanctifies us, and transforms us from the inside out.

When we encounter the Holy Spirit, we encounter the Spirit of Truth

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth; he will guide you, convict you of things that are not ‘truth’ in your life, and show you behaviors and thinking that are not in line with the Word of God. He will guide you into truth (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit is the beautiful counsellor, one called to walk alongside and guide us into truth.

He dwells with us and will be in us

The Holy Spirit is God with us on earth right now. Jesus and Father God are in heaven, and the Holy Spirit is administering the Kingdom on earth. When we are baptized in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit fills us, dwells with us and will be in us, as the Bible shows. (I Corinthians 3:16, 2 Timothy 1:14, Romans 8:11).

Prayer Point: Thank you Holy Spirit for your guidance, comfort and truth. I ask that as I lean in through this devotional to encounter you afresh that you would fill me, guide me into truth in all areas of my life and empower me for my future.
