I Have Called You by Name (S1-E1)

DAY 4 OF 4

Do you see Jesus?

We don't see Jesus much yet. That was my first thought while watching this first episode of The Chosen. Do we even know who Jesus is? It doesn't become clear immediately.

Not surprisingly, in Jesus' time, people didn't know exactly who Jesus was in the beginning either. It takes several years before the ministry of Jesus really starts. In John, we read about the wedding at Cana. Here Jesus is still just one of the guests. There Jesus performs his first miracle. Not even "wholeheartedly," but because His mother almost forces Him to do something.

So it is not surprising that in this series, they do not make Jesus immediately very visible. Jesus does see Mary, and He sets her free. So perhaps a better question would be: do you think Jesus sees you too?

We read in Luke 19 the story of Zacchaeus. He is eager to see Jesus. Literally, he is looking for a tall tree. He makes an effort to get even a glimpse of Jesus. Jesus knows this, sees Zacchaeus sitting there high up in the tree, and says, "Zacchaeus, today I want to be in the house with you."

Wonderful, isn't it when you want to see Jesus so much that He then invites Himself to be with you?

This is not well received by the people. How does Jesus always see those people most people don't expect him to see? People they themselves don't (want to) see? Why does Jesus have an eye for people who are not worth seeing in the eyes of others? Jesus gives a wonderful answer to that: "I have come to save what is lost."

Maybe you don't feel that lost, but you long to see Jesus. Know that Jesus sees your longing and responds to it. Do you see Him?

Take the following questions to consider:

  • Where do you see Jesus?
  • What does it do to you that Jesus came for those who are lost?

Prayer:

"Lord Jesus, I want to see You, even if I have to climb the highest tree to do so. You came to set me free too. Thank You! Amen."

P.S. This is the last day of this reading plan. We hope it has helped you as a follower of Jesus and that you have enjoyed it, but, of course, there is much more to discover.

The materials in this reading plan come from Alongsiders, a European discipleship movement. Do you want to take the next step? Do you have a heart for discipleship and want to know how to really follow Jesus?
