The Prophet Elisha

DAY 14 OF 26

A Sad Twist of the Story

The leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever.” (2 Kings 5:27)

Elisha did not want to accept any presents from Naaman. God’s grace was not for sale! It was important for Naaman to understand that his healing was a free gift of the Lord God.

However, Elisha’s servant Gehazi thought this was a perfect opportunity to get rich. He made up a story about some guests arriving and asked Naaman for money and two changes of clothing. Naaman was happy to give him what he asked for and even sent two of his servants to carry it all for him. Gehazi’s plan seemed to work!

But Elisha knew what he had done and strongly condemned Gehazi’s greed. What made things even worse was that Gehazi had pretended to speak on behalf of Elisha the prophet. He had thereby abused Elisha’s authority as a man of God, giving Naaman the impression that the Lord accepted payment after all.

Gehazi was severely punished for his greed and lies. Naaman’s leprosy now clung to him and his descendants.

This story is a warning for all of us. The love of money can be the first step towards all kinds of sin. Maybe we think we can hide these sins from God, but He always knows! Do not let greed lead you astray. Instead, serve God faithfully, and He will reward you.
