Tips On Motherhood

DAY 1 OF 7

THRIVING IN THE WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY

Moms, let’s be real: we have a love/hate relationship with technology. We love it when our child is being entertained, but we hate it when our child cannot function without it—or when they think they cannot function without it. As moms, this is a time when we need to step up and put limits on technology.

Here are my tips for taming technology in your family:

• Limit the amount of screen time. Whether it’s playing games on your phone or looking through Instagram/Snapchat photos, we all need limits on the amount of time we are using technology. It’s not that technology is evil (it’s not), but it is a time waster. Set a time that is appropriate for your child and stick with it. It’s the same principle as when our parents used to turn off the TV and say, “Go outside and play.”

• No technology at the dinner table. Family dinners should consist of gathering around the table and talking to one another, looking people in the eyes, and having a real conversation. You cannot engage with someone if you are looking at your phone. Instead of being on your phones at dinner, here’s a thought: talk to each other. Ask your child what was the best and worst thing about their day. Engage with your child by listening to their point of view.

• Put the charging station for all technology in your master bedroom at night. Our minds need a break. It is a good idea to put the phones to bed at night so our children can actually sleep soundly.

Now, moms, in order for these three easy steps to work, you MUST stick with the program. Don’t give in to your child’s reasoning. Keep telling yourself, “I’m the mom, I know what is best.”

Technology is fine in moderation. It only becomes a problem when we allow it to take over our lives. As the mom, you are the gatekeeper.
