Screens & Souls

DAY 1 OF 10

Your screen and your soul

Technology is a tension, isn’t it? Families feel this when they FaceTime siblings two states away . . . and when they sit in the same room with everyone in their own digital worlds. Friends feel this when their phones keep them together when they’re apart . . . and keep them apart when they’re together. Parents feel this when a tablet makes a long car ride a less than traumatic experience . . . and when that same tablet becomes their child’s addiction. Christians feel this when their Bibles are closer than ever . . . but the fruit of patience and self-control seem much farther away.

In the upcoming devotions, I want to dig deep into the connection between your screens and your soul. My goal is to maximize the blessings, minimize the bad things, and help you create boundaries so that these screens are a net gain for your walk with God.

Paul, looking around at the culture of ancient Ephesus, encouraged the Christians there, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise” (Ephesians 5:15). I have a hunch he would say the same things as he observed our digital culture today. In an age where we “live” with screens on every side, may God give us the wisdom to use technology always and only for his glory.
