You And Me Forever: Marriage In Light Of EternitySample
"Grace on Display"
No one wants to be that couple that is always fighting, always at odds, always unhappy. Everyone wants to have the kind of marriage their friends and family admire.
So much of the effort put into marriages is aimed at looking good in front of other people.
But that’s not the point. God is the point. Paul actually explains that God created marriage so that the world could see who He is.
Focus on making God look good, and you’re headed in the right direction. Godly couples see marriage as a reflection of God, so they work hard on their marriages. They confess their sins, humble themselves, serve one another, and do everything they can to display God’s love in their marriage. The great part is that those who focus on God’s glory end up with a marriage that others admire!
In the Bible’s longest passage on marriage, Ephesians 5:22–33, Paul takes the focus off of our earthly marriages and points our attention toward the perfect marriage: the marriage between Jesus Christ and the church. So as you continue to think through your own marriage and how it can best glorify God, it is essential that you follow Paul’s lead and think deeply about the way Jesus relates to us as His church. In an effort to be a better husband or wife, then, consider what God has done for you through Jesus Christ.
Discuss with your spouse: How does Paul portray marriage here? Does your marriage look anything like this?
