What Was Jesus' Mission on Earth?

DAY 2 OF 13

Jesus came with the authority of the Father

“I have come in my Father's name” (John 5:43).

Jesus' coming into this world was the plan of the triune God, consisting of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Although only the Son became man, He came by commission of the Father. That gave His acts on earth divine authority — at least if people were ready to believe that Jesus was sent by God. Most people didn’t. Therefore, they questioned Jesus' words or even considered His statements blasphemous.

In John 20, Jesus has fulfilled His mission on earth. He proclaimed God's Kingdom, died for mankind and rose again from the dead. Then He gives His disciples a special commission: “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you” (John 20:21). Just as Jesus came in the Name of His Father, so the disciples are sent into the world in the Name of Jesus. With His authority, they are to spread the good news that people can be reconciled to God. In His Name they can forgive sins and cast out demons. But again, people will only listen if they understand and accept that God is the One behind this message.

Do you accept Jesus' words in the Bible as coming directly from God? And do you value the words of people speaking in God’s Name?

About this Plan

What Was Jesus' Mission on Earth?

Jesus Christ came to earth for a purpose. His coming was a conscious decision. During the years in which He traveled around the land of Israel and made God's Kingdom known, He also explained why He came to earth. Several times, we read in the Gospels: “I have come to...”. This reading plan aims to trace some of those statements to make us aware of Jesus’ mission.
