Questions Jesus Asked

DAY 5 OF 5

Jesus asked, “What do you think?” in four separate scenarios, recorded only in the Book of Matthew.

Jesus individually asked Simon Peter, the disciples, the chief priests, and the Pharisees, what they thought of His teaching. He used questions carefully. We see Jesus teaching, testing, rebuking, or praising throughout the Gospels. He also affirmed the Old Testament in His ministry.

God is kind and inclusive. He welcomes everyone into a relationship with Him, like a hospitable host welcoming guests to His party. He doesn’t force His beliefs upon us, as we see from Jesus’ question, but instead asks our hearts: “What do you think?” Or in other words, “Do you understand what I’m saying?” “What do you think of partnering with Me in life?”

When Jesus asked these individuals what they thought, He provided them an opportunity to choose His teaching, His ways––choose Him. He was lighting the way through the darkness of religious deeds, idolatry, and empty philosophies, much like His offer to us today.

We have the opportunity to choose Him first in all areas of our lives, today and every day.

May we reply to God’s call on our lives like Peter did in John 6:68-69: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”

What do you think your next step is in your faith journey?

We hope you've enjoyed this devotion. Now that you have finished our YouVersion reading plan for “Questions Jesus Asked,” we’d like to invite you to explore what it looks like to grow in your relationship with Christ.
