Year of the Bible: Part Eleven of Twelve

DAY 9 OF 30

Staying on Course of Our Mission

Have you ever been in the ocean swimming and found yourself shocked at how quickly the currents can take you far away from where you entered the water? It doesn’t take much to drift in the ocean, just as it doesn’t take much to stray from your life purpose.

The One who created us with purpose is Jesus, and He is in charge! Greater than angels, He’s on a throne that is righteous and forever. Having created the universe, He’ll also see it to its end. In the meantime, we live in a season of history defined by one word from Hebrews 1:13: “till.” We live between Jesus’s exaltation at the Father’s right hand and the time when all enemies will be under His feet (Psalm 110:1).

So, now that Jesus the glorious and ascended Son is seated at the Father’s right hand, the clock is ticking while we carry the gospel to the ends of the earth and, by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit, finish getting all of God’s enemies under His feet. Though it’s difficult for us to see right now, all things will be subject to God. God has sanctified you (set you apart) and me to participate in that task.

For that reason, drifting away and forgetting why we’re here is dangerous. Just as Jesus is the exact representation of God, believers represent Jesus on earth. Drifting just a short way from that passionate calling can have a huge impact. When we stop practicing the basic disciplines of the Christian life, we are already starting to drift.

Question: When Jesus returns, will He find you busy with what He has asked you to do?

Prayer: Focus once again on the grandeur and splendor of Jesus, who has defeated death and ascended in glory. Commit yourself afresh to be available in the task at hand—enforcing Christ’s victory through prayer, word, and action.
