Year of the Bible: Part Eleven of Twelve

DAY 21 OF 30

It's Good for You

This passage may feel like a list of behaviors to avoid. James did itemize some ungodly behaviors, but the primary direction was to draw closer to God. James understood the nature of this struggle. He didn't believe Jesus was the Messiah until he drew closer to Him after the resurrection. His writing does not suggest we can become more righteous Christians by avoiding sinful behaviors; it recommends drawing closer to God because, simply put, it's good for you.

When we struggle with sin and feel overwhelmed, we are in spiritual warfare. We are no less righteous but are in a battle for our well-being. Spiritual warfare is a battle between you and the devil. Jesus defeated the devil so we don't have to—if we lean on Him. The devil trembles at Jesus's name and can't stand to be in God's presence, so when you draw closer to God, the devil has no choice but to flee.

James explains that self-centered attitudes are purged by humbling ourselves and submitting to God's will. When we get caught up in selfish desires, we tend to overlook the consideration for others. James lists these ungodly attributes because God disregards proud motives and brings grace to the humbled. This isn't an arrogant ploy for James to tell people what to do or not to do. Instead, James shared the Godly wisdom he received by drawing close to God because it was good for him, and it's good for you!

Question: How do you respond to being told what to do or what not to do?

Prayer: Thank God that He always has your best interests in mind, and ask Him to remind you of that as you deal with spiritual warfare. Additionally, thank Him that Jesus is the clear path to draw near to God and for the strength to stay on the path.
