Being Present in Your Own Life

DAY 2 OF 3

I THOUGHT I WAS SERVING THE LORD

How easy it is to get caught up in being busy. When my kids were still home, I thought I was the best mom, wife, and all-around person. I was very involved in my church, serving on various committees and the Pastor Parish Board. I was going to school to get my Lay Minister’s License, involved in what was then known as the Jaycee Auxiliary. The local Mayor named me as Chairperson of the Bicentennial Committee. My husband was a leader in the city where we lived, so I also became involved in various city committees.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men”. Colossians 3:23

There is a fine line to knowing when we are serving men, self, or the Lord. It was gratifying to be so involved, yet something was missing. Sure, I was a Christian, but all the events in life had distracted me from the whole principle behind what I was doing.

It isn’t wrong to be involved, but when we get so busy doing life that we leave the Life-Giver, things are totally out of balance. We were at church every time the doors were open. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret that because it was an example; yet many times, I left feeling empty.

God doesn’t want us to say yes to everything because we become a yes-person. We become a person who gets burned out and are of little use. I was so involved that I was too tired to spend quality time with the very One I thought I was serving.

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:15-17

We even hosted and attended weekly home Bible Studies, and my actions seemed right. Yet, I continuously thought, “What is God’s will for my life?” What was all my involvement gaining for the kingdom?
