Let the Church Bow Down: Encounter Christ as King

DAY 3 OF 5

WHY HE IS KING

Jesus is King.

But why is He King?

To know the domain of Christ’s reign and the prerogative of His kingship is not to immediately recognize the reason for His rule. Jesus is King because only He can bring God’s purposes for the universe to their fulfillment. Jesus Christ reigns in order to destroy the works of evil, empower the oppressed and unite heaven & earth under God.

Satan and his demonic cohorts are always plotting to undermine the right relationship of God the Creator with His creation. The enemy of humanity entices us to sin, to turn ourselves away from God. But sin is not only a personal experience; it is also a social and systemic reality. Jesus Christ sits as King and enacts the Kingdom of God so that the devil’s plan to keep us separated from God individually and collectively will fail.

To this end, Jesus also reigns for the empowerment of those who have been oppressed. He is the King who identifies with the poor and needy, and He rescues them (Psalm 82:4). Even now, we can experience the spiritual empowerment that Christ’s death and resurrection bring, but one day we will also see complete liberation for all, who have been kept bound by the world’s political, economic and social systems of oppression.

Ultimately, Jesus is King so that heaven and earth will bow before God together. God made the universe so that His creation would know Him in love and truth and would respond to who He is with adoration and worship. While dark forces have sought to obscure our vision of God, Jesus reigns so that we can experience the intimacy with God that we were made for. King Jesus is the great reconciler, crucified, resurrected, and enthroned to unite the entire universe under the reign of God in the right relationship with God.

Jesus does not only have the right to reign; He has reasons to reign. May we encounter the beauty of God’s plan in Christ’s kingship.

Pray with me: Father, thank You for not letting evil have the final say. Thank You for sending Jesus, raising Jesus, and seating Jesus at Your right hand so that the devil’s works would be destroyed, the oppressed would be empowered, and the universe would be united under Your reign. We say yes to You, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
