7 Days of Hope for Overcoming Eating Disorders

DAY 7 OF 7

Confidence, Purpose, & Joy

We serve an amazing God who is peace, truth, and love. Unfortunately, we also have an enemy who comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. He wants nothing more than to steal our confidence, kill our purpose, and destroy our joy.

“The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy.” (John 10:10)

Without confidence, you feel frozen, unable to move or step out because you fear you may fail or be rejected. When stripped of your confidence, it becomes difficult to live out the boldness God has called you to, and you’ll likely begin to refrain from opening your heart to those around you. When you no longer have the ability to open your heart, walls are built up that keep you from receiving the love your soul deeply needs to feel love and affirmation from others.

Without purpose, it’s hard to even get out of bed sometimes. If you become entangled in insecurity, the enemy knows you will be hesitant to follow God’s calling to share His good news with the world. We each have been created with specific talents and passions that God wants us to use to lead people into relationship with Him. If we are too busy doubting ourselves and filling our minds with all of the reasons we aren’t qualified or good enough to do what He’s asking, we will never fulfill the purpose God has designed for us, and the enemy has won.

Without joy, you will be running on empty, depending on the world to bring you any kind of happiness. Joy is found only in the hearts of those who abide in God and believe He is faithful even when times are hard. First Peter 1:8 says that “even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.”The enemy is nothing but a thief; once he robs you of true joy and has you depending on this broken world for happiness, he knows it will be much easier to break you too.

But there is always hope! If we continue reading John 10:10, the Lord assures us, “But I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”Imagine having life to the full again. Can you picture what it will be like to live completely free from addictions, habits, and anxiety clouding your mind? To live with the assurance that God has called you and deemed you worthy for a specific purpose? When we refuse the enemy the opportunity to steal, kill, and destroy us, God is able to bring us into the rich, abundant life that brings honor and glory to His name.

Eating disorders (ED) are underwhelmingly discussed, highly misunderstood, and rarely spoken about in relation to Scripture and faith. But even though the Bible may not address this trial specifically, you can still look to God’s Word for wisdom, truth, and healing from the eating disorders you are battling.
