[Life of David] How to Wage Our Own Battles

DAY 6 OF 7

Invest in the battles of the next generation

Do you think that your decisions today have the power to change your tomorrow? Even better, do you think that future generations will be affected by your decisions today? The answer is yes. Our decisions today can open or close pathways for our future, for generations. Imagine if you made the decision to change your place of residence to another country… Everything would change: your relationships, your workplace, the friends you go out with, the language. Your whole perspective about your future and your generations would change, too.

King David was a legacy-minded man. In other words, he had a generational perspective. When David defeated Hadadezer, king of Zobah, he found gold, bronze, and silver but he didn’t keep it for himself. Instead, he set it apart to build the temple. He had already been told that he was not going to build the temple, but that his son would. So, he was preparing the things Solomon would need – getting his legacy ready.

We are in a battle today, for tomorrow. This means we must focus beyond today, the circumstances, or winning at all costs. We need to realize that God is doing something today to build our legacy for the future. This doesn’t mean that we need to write our will. It means we need to make a difference in our family, in our friendships, in our hearts, and in all the people who surround us, so that they may be encouraged to fight their own battles tomorrow.

Legacy is not what you leave behind. Legacy is what you invest forward. It is what you are setting apart for other people to do in the future. We invest in our lives, as well as in the Kingdom of God, because this whole thing is not about land or material things. It is about the battle for the heart. It is not about how we respond in the moment, but about how we respond looking forward. That is where true power resides. When things go wrong, or we seem to be stuck, we need to remind ourselves to look forward.

If every one of us would keep this in mind, every day we would try to be better than yesterday. We would choose the best way of impacting the people around us by bringing the Kingdom of God down to earth.

About this Plan

[Life of David] How to Wage Our Own Battles

Life is a constant battle. Right now, we are either in a battle, coming out of one, or about to get into one. King David had his share of battles, and God gave him the victory everywhere he went. What was his secret? Can we do the same? In this reading plan, Pastor Gregg Matte shows us through the life of King David the key principles to do just that.
