A Mindful Moment

DAY 2 OF 5

Being Still Before God

Boredom can be the worst, and most of us avoid it like the plague. So why would you want to sit quietly without any distraction? What could God possibly be thinking in asking you just to sit still and meditate?

It turns out that avoiding boredom is often just a defense mechanism against the uncomfortable feelings and thoughts that we need to deal with. Stillness helps you notice those feelings and thoughts while providing an opportunity to notice God’s presence too. God has the healing and strength you need, but you have to get quiet so that you can notice and receive that provision.

What have past experiences with silence been like for you? Whether or not it’s comfortable, being still is one of the ways that we show up for God and allow God to show up for us.

Take three minutes to just sit in stillness. During that time, stay quiet (maybe with closed eyes) and pay attention to the experiences in your body and mind. Notice that God is present with you. You don’t have to feel a certain way. You’re just noticing what happens when you sit still. When you are finished, jot down some observations in your journal.

About this Plan

A Mindful Moment

This devotional focuses on four key categories—physical sensations, negative emotions, compassion to self, and lovingkindness to others. It can be used as a guide for daily meditation and reflection but allows for flexibility, providing inspiration and God’s peace in any situation. Use it on your journey to self-love, and then let it take you to a place of love for all as Jesus calls us to love.
