Hacking Dating: A Dating Guide for Christians

DAY 5 OF 5

Don’t Squash the Joy

When you put too much pressure on yourself to find “the one,” Christian dating can be stressful.

When you approach the dating process super-seriously, Christian dating can be overwhelming.

When you’re not confident in your worth, Christian dating can be intimidating.

Don’t squash the joy of dating as a Christian by overwhelming yourself with pressure, expectations, and doubts. Even though many Christians “date to marry,” it doesn’t mean the process must be serious or boring. With boundaries in place and your heart connected to Christ, you can have fun dating and still glorify God.

Let God Take on the Pressure

Cast your worries, fears, and anxieties about finding “the one” on God; He can take the pressure. Because the truth is, it’s up to Him anyway, not you. Sure, you have a part to play–your soulmate is highly unlikely to show up on your doorstep randomly, so you do need to put yourself out there. But when you pray about how to do that, God will guide you in the right direction. He will make your dating path straight. You just need to trust Him. When you do, dating becomes less stressful and more enjoyable!

Let the Journey Flow Naturally

Going into a first date with a checklist of questions to determine if someone meets your expectations and standards will feel more like an interview than anything else. While it is important to ensure someone has the same life goals, values, and beliefs as you, it’s better to find out as naturally as possible. If you take the process too seriously, you might become too focused on results that you don’t get the most out of the experience. How can you really get to know someone’s heart when all you’re focused on is whether or not they’re financially stable enough to provide for a family right now? There’s a time and a place for serious discussions, but don’t rush them. Instead, encourage your date to share their hobbies, interests, sense of humor, hopes, and dreams with you. And let yourself enjoy the beginning stages of a new relationship.

Let Yourself Relax

You’re not you when you’re stressed and overwhelmed. So, whether you’re messaging someone on a dating app or meeting up for a first date, relax and let your personality shine through. Remember, the person you’re dating is interested in YOU, not some "perfect" version of you that you think they want to see. When you’ve done the work to strengthen your relationship with God, and you know what you bring to the table, you can relax. You are worthy–with your flaws and all–and the right person will see that no matter what.

So whether you’ve been in the dating game for a while or you’ve just downloaded a Christian dating app to give it a swipe, keep these dating hacks in mind. God’s got you–trust in His perfect timing and beautiful plan for your life during your dating season and beyond.
