Mastering Your Body

DAY 4 OF 4

Be a Good Steward of Money and Have a Spiritual Purpose

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothea man with rags. Proverbs 23:21 (KJV)

Let’s hold the relationship between our finances and fitness in mind. Investing in healthy foods and eating the right food portion has financial benefits. The right food portion means our groceries will last longer while maintaining or losing weight. Consuming healthy foods can reduce our visits to the doctor or the need for costly medical treatments.

We should ask ourselves some questions. For example, is it financially beneficial to cut back on the number of times we dine outside the home or order food? Is our diet costing us medically? Do we have a budget for groceries, and how can we ensure we are not overspending? Are we intentional about avoiding foods that are detrimental to our health and finances?

I write based on my experience. When the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to the financial toll of my eating habit, I started making changes. Given that I have taken the time to search the scriptures concerning my physical health, the Holy Spirit brings the Word of God to mind when I have difficulty doing what is right for my health.

Finally, fitness can become an idol without an eternal purpose in mind. While serving in the military, my body was my idol, and my sense of worth and identity was rooted in being physically fit. My spiritual and mental health suffered while I worshipped my body. As you pursue your fitness goals, I urge you to hold God in mind. Have spiritual purposes for staying healthy. Without God in mind, your body can become your master.
