Renew Your Prayer Life: Scripture and the ArtsSample
Praying on the Move
We know from research into learning styles that sometimes we think and learn better when moving. If you feel restless or stuck praying in your usual spot, why not go for a walk with God as your companion? Prayer can happen anywhere!
Consider this music video.
Wrudell Timothy composed and performed this song, “Step by Step.” He writes, “I wanted the video for Step by Step to have constant movement to signify the human journey through life ... We also see the progression from “walking” to God “step by step,” becoming more like Him; taking on more of His characteristics, to then eventually be running to Him.”
Why not “walk with God” by literally taking a walk with God? Consider the disciples who met Jesus on their walk to Emmaus in Luke 24. Puzzled by his crucifixion and not yet aware of his glorious resurrection, they were wrestling with faith and doubt.
“As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them [. . .] Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! They said to each other, ‘Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?’” Luke 24:14-15; 31-32
Who knows what fresh insight God might give you as you walk with Him?
- Prayer may be you telling God about your thoughts, your day, or your problems.
- Your prayer could be one of adoration, gratitude, and praise—seeing the world that God has made and telling him (silently or out loud) how magnificent it is and how grateful you are.
- Your prayer might be contemplative, moving in a natural walking rhythm and opening your heart to God.
- You could try a “prayer walk” of intercession, walking around a neighborhood while praying for the people living and working there.
- Your prayer could take another form, which may be different every time.
When and where can you walk and pray today?
How would it change your relationship with God if you talked with Him like you would talk with a friend while you walked together?
