Be Still: 15 Days With God

DAY 4 OF 15

THE STILL, SMALL VOICE

and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. 1 KINGS 19:12

Elijah realized God was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire when the Lord finally spoke to him in a still, small voice. “What are you doing here, Elijah?

How the Lord spoke to him was not through spectacular events. Elijah had assumed that the people's hearts would change due to the huge miracle of fire coming down from heaven. Yet, in truth, the Lord had already moved the hearts of seven thousand men who didn’t need a miracle but had instead been instructed by the still small voice of God to them.

Real results in any person’s life are more from that still small voice that beckons them to humble themselves to come and seek the face of God, rather than any sign they might observe. God does not want to intimidate us by a show of force but rather to influence us by His love so that we might believe and trust in Him. No one can be cajoled or manipulated to come to Christ. It has to come from the Lord beckoning from within that they respond willingly to the Gospel.

That still small voice speaks through the Gospel today to whoever will come and have life through Jesus.

About this Plan

Be Still: 15 Days With God

"Be still, and know that I am God;" (PSALM 46:10a). Many Christians are familiar with this verse, but do we really understand it? This exhortation applies when we are distracted by our successes, as when we are fearful and disquieted by some troublesome news. We need to learn to quiet ourselves by opening God’s Word and gaining His perspective in both cases.
