The 7 Last Words of Christ With Jim Caviezel

DAY 5 OF 7

The Fifth Word - My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Have we not all felt forsaken at times?

When God feels far off and distant, or when we struggle to feel connected to our faith, Jesus reminds us that our God is not a distant entity, uncaring and uninvolved.

Instead, our God became fully human and experienced true suffering, even to the point of feeling abandoned.

In this Last Word, Jesus shows us two things: first, we have a God who stands with us in suffering. We are not alone in our feelings of abandonment or desolation. We need only look upon the cross.

Secondly, Jesus shows us how we are to respond. Even in times of darkness and desolation, we are invited to cry out to God.

On the cross, Jesus quotes Psalm 22, a psalm that begins in lament but ends with the assurance that the darkness never has the final say. As we share our deepest sorrows with God, we can trust that God is still there. God is always there.

Share with God now: are you in a time of consolation or desolation in your life? How is your prayer life and relationship with God? Is there anyone in your life who is experiencing a time of suffering? How can you be God’s love to them?
