SUBMIT TO GOD'S COMMANDS
Can you imagine what life would look like without any laws or guidelines whatsoever? My guess is complete and cataclysmic chaos! Submitting to authority and rules is not always a popular proposition. However, obeying the law is necessary for society's order, safety, and well-being.
God gave the Israelites his laws to follow after he delivered them out of Egypt during Moses' time. These are the Ten Commandments; not one hundred, not one thousand, just ten simple commands that are as applicable today as they were then. We are to submit to God's laws because they are holy. They reflect God's righteousness and reveal to us our fallen nature. (Romans 7:12 NIV). His statutes are trustworthy, righteous, and more precious than pure gold.
When the Israelites didn't submit to God, he gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. Dismissing God's commands leads to sin. Eve's temptation by Satan and disregard for obeying God's single command not to eat from one specific tree in the Garden of Eden is a case in point.
To help us submit to the Ten Commandments, God gives us the Holy Spirit, our most reliable and trustworthy compass for clear direction. In John 14:16 NIV, Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit permanently dwells in the hearts of all believers at the moment of salvation. To lead a fruitful life pleasing to God, we should completely submit to the Holy Spirit, the highest governing authority living within us, and who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance into God's eternal kingdom.
We are all subject to governing authorities. When we rebel against them, we rebel against God. Is there an area in your life where you're rebelling against authority? Begin by praying about it this way, as Matthew states in Matthew 6:9-10 NIV, "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." Surrender to God, the supreme authority over your life. He knows your situation and your needs before you come to him. Let go and let God! He's got you covered now and for eternity!
You can read the Lord's Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1-17 (NIV).
