Following Well: Getting Better in Our Walk With ChristSample
Embrace Humility
While our significance and influence cannot be over-emphasized, to follow well, we must not see ourselves and our importance as better than others. Every act of authentic Biblical following is rooted in humility. The idea of humility in following expresses the way we value those we lead and follow. Showing respect and humility to others puts the worth of others on display. The books of Philippians and 1 Peter, respectively, remind us to approach our leader-follower relationship with humility.
According to today's texts, the results of a lack of relational humility within leader/follower relationships are anxiety and humiliation. Anxiety, because pride sets any relationship out of balance as it emphasizes one above another, which prevents our productivity and effectiveness overall. Relational imbalance makes the parties involved anxious about the outcome of the relationship. Therefore, to follow well, we have to see God's value for our humility as essential for our growth and development of how we follow.
Prayer
Lord, help me to see the value of serving others humbly. Lord, remove selfishness in me so that I can follow authentically. Let me know the importance of those I lead and follow in Jesus' name.
