Homeschool Moms Teach the Psalms (Psalm 15-21)

DAY 6 OF 7

Day 6

Psalm 20

Whenever I am in my own trial, it is very healing for me to pray for others (James 5:16). David does the same here and, as he does, he realizes God will answer his own prayers. This then encourages him that he can trust in the “Name of the LORD Our God.”

David also declares God as the “God of Jacob.” Jacob was not called the “friend of God” like Abraham (Isaiah 41:8), nor was he the child of promise that Isaac was. Jacob was called a deceiver, but God attached His name to him. This gives us all great hope. If God can be the God of not only the righteous, and the one of promise, but can be the God of one like Jacob, then there is hope for all of us. Jacob wrestled with God for His blessing. We pray that our children would do the same.

I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Exodus 3:6

David may have shouted when declaring: “May we shout for joy over your salvation” (v. 5). In the same way, there is no greater joy than to see our children walk with God (3 John 1:4). This is our constant prayer.

We can also teach them what David learned: to trust in man is sure collapse, but to trust in the Name of the LORD is salvation. “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright" (v. 7). In this day of unrest and uncertainty, our children need to know who and what they can trust—God and His Word are always true, while Jesus declares Himself as “The Truth” (John 14:6).

To Do With The Kids:

Read Psalm 20. Ask: Who can we trust when it looks like all is against us? Study ancient chariots and battle horses. Discuss their strength and position in a battle. An army could trust them to help secure victory. Read Exodus 15:19. What happened to Pharaoh’s chariots and horses when they were chasing Moses and the children of Israel? Who was greater: their God or Pharaoh’s army? Watch a video on chariots (www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw_7nYDjHnw). Draw a chariot or a battle horse. Copy verse 7 on the drawing.
