DAY 2 OF 5

The Rocky Ground

Today's Soil Sample: The Rocky Ground

In this analogy, what stood out to me was the phrases, "they did not have much soil" and then "they had no depth of soil."

Ouch! That's going to leave a mark.

You don't have to be a farmer to understand that plants need roots and roots need depth of soil to grow. But since this rocky ground didn't offer a depth of soil, it was scorched and withered away.

How can we avoid being easily strayed?

There was no depth of soil. What does that mean? Well, the faith wasn’t planted. It wasn’t deep enough to withstand difficult times. When the storm came, it took the faith with it. How can we avoid this? How can we have deep faith?

Well, there are a few ways, but ultimately our faith is a product of God’s will. So, being that, one of our first prayers should be that God preserves us. Certainly, we know we can’t lose our salvation. What God has started, he will accomplish. However, this doesn’t mean people can’t backslide. The people who are called to salvation will continue to believe. Those who aren’t called to salvation may believe for a time but wither under challenging times. In this case, they didn’t lose their salvation. They never had it.

So, with that, we should pray. Pray that God would preserve our faith, strengthen it and deepen it. How can we do that practically? Read the Bible, pray to God, commune with the saints, and more. The means of grace are available to us for this very reason. It’s a way we experience God’s grace. These are outlets for us to deepen our faith and root ourselves in good soil.

Uncommen Questions:

Are you on rocky ground?

Is your faith planted?

Uncommen Challenge:

Let's make changes and add some depth to our soil so roots can grow.

About this Plan

Uncommen: Soil

Join us as we look at the parable of the sower spreading seed on four different kinds of soil. They all get the same seed (Gospel) but each one responds to it differently. What kind of soil are you?
