Day 3: Read
The first step to your road to victory, or to experiencing true freedom in your life, is to read the Word of God. The Bible is not an old, lifeless book that has no relevance for today. In fact, God’s Word is exactly that: words spoken by God. Since they are God’s words, they have power, life, and all that you need.
David said, “I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure" (Psalm 119:162). That certainly sums up God’s Word. It is great treasure because it reveals who God is, what He has done, what He does today, and what He will do in the future. God’s Word is full of principles and promises that you can trust in. Why trust in God’s Word? Well, a word that is spoken will only go as far as one’s nature and character. God’s nature is holy; His character is flawless. So whatever God says is trustworthy because who He is and what He does stands behind the Word.
God’s Word is His will and purpose, His heart and mind. You discover the plans of God and the purposes of God in your own life as you read the Word. Since God’s Word reveals His heart and shows how He thinks and acts, you can get to know God on a personal level. Your ongoing relationship with God can grow by reading God’s Word. Knowing God and growing closer to Christ is possible through His Word.
One of the signs that you are a disciple of Jesus is that you abide in God’s Word. The Greek word for abide that is used in this passage is meno. It literally means, “To continue, remain, to dwell, rest, lodge, to settle, stay.” Abiding in God’s Word is resting, depending, and surrendering to the treasure that is freely given.
God has much treasure for you to experience. The question is, have you picked up God’s Word to read it? Are you abiding, remaining, and resting in God’s words that give life? Whatever you need freedom from, the Bible has the answer. As you abide in the Word, eternal treasure is yours and you will never be the same again!
