DAY 5 OF 7

Fearless

The greatest risk-takers I know have identified specific faces and places they are called to pray for. They would call themselves the pastors of those places. They would say, “You know that coffee shop (or restaurant or gym) around the corner? I go there often, and I care about the people there. I know the staff by name, and I’m getting to know their stories.”

Striking up a conversation with a perfect stranger can be awkward and scary. If you’re nervous about it, consider praying a similar prayer before you walk into an environment where God might prompt you to connect with someone new. Say to God, “Lord, would you father me through this? Would you give me your heart, your eyes? Please allow me to have conversations that will encourage people to keep searching for you.”

We get to massevot when we spark ongoing relationship. I love the word ongoing, because it’s not just a one-and-done thing. Building relationships isn’t something you do and check off a list. It’s a marathon that has potential to last a lifetime.

You’re not supposed to become a slick salesperson who slides in to close a deal. You’re looking for where you can build consistency. Make the most of every opportunity. Walk into the places you’ve been praying about, expectant for opportunities to strike up grace-filled conversations.

The next question you can ask God as you are building relationship with the people you’ve been praying for is this: “What is the next best right step for these people? I know their name. I know their story. Is the right step to invite them to church? Is it to invite them to my house for dinner? Is it to tell them my story? Is it to tell them God’s story?”

There’s a world of hurting, confused people out there. I want to risk myself to reach as many as I can. How about you? Let’s be bold. Let’s be fearless with our faith. When I say risk boldly, I don’t mean risk loudly or risk obnoxiously. Risk with grace and truth.

Ask God for opportunities to declare fearlessly, with love and compassion, the reality of good news.

About this Plan

This Invitational Life

Learn how to create non-threatening conversations that point people to Christ. This often occurs through sharing your own story and quietly listening to theirs. From Steve Carter, teaching pastor at Willow Creek Community Church, in his new book "This Invitational Life."
