Caves - Caves

DAY 6 OF 7

The Robe

When I decided to include this on the devotional, I questioned as to why, because it’s such a short song. But if I can be honest for a moment, sometimes it doesn’t take a whole lot of words to tell a powerful story.

King David was a powerful king who experienced a pretty quick rise to stardom in the kingdom. David knew what it felt like to be on top, and what it felt like to be hiding in the caves. One of David’s most well known moments was probably not his best moment.

To summarize the story, David fell victim to lust and temptation when he saw this woman Bathsheba bathing through a window. David, knowing he had power as king, summons Bathsheeba, sleeps with her, gets her pregnant, and has her husband killed to cover it all up. As a result, God sends the prophet Nathan to deliver a pretty harsh message. God promises to let David live, but as a result of his sin, the child will die.

David then goes into a period of mourning, weeping, not eating, not socializing, covered in rags, begging God to spare the child. When the child dies, suddenly David gets up, and continues to live as king. Read to story in the verses attached to see how his servants respond.

What does this story mean for us? There are times when we’ve made mistakes, or had some things in our life happen that we can’t change. There’s a time for Godly sorrow and mourning, but there also comes a time to arise and enter in to a new season. When you’re in a place where you can’t change what’s been done or what’s happened, it’s time to call upon God, and ask him to exchange our filthy rags for the robe of his righteousness.

About this Plan

Caves - Caves

"Caves" is a project birthed out of a difficult season for the band’s singer and Young Adults Pastor Josh McCabe. Stepping away from ministry for over a year, Caves tells the story of brokenness, uncertainty, and God’s closeness through the midst of a dry season. Join Josh and Caves on this installment of The Overflow Devo and learn more about how the word of God inspired these songs.
