In God We Trust

DAY 6 OF 6

Fight for Unity

So, with all the chaos in the world, should Christians hold out hope for eternity and avoid all the problems now? Of course not. We’re called to be a light in a dark world, which doesn’t happen if we’re hiding.

We’re called to bring a little bit of God’s Kingdom here to earth. So while we do have hope for eternity, we also have work to do today. In fact, this is what Jesus had to say about what our lives should look like here on earth:

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14-16 NLT

We are Christ’s ambassadors, not earthly citizens. But that doesn’t mean we check out. It means we show up. We do good. We love others. And in doing so, we draw people to the light of Christ, living in a way that makes others want the hope we have.

One of the ways we do this is by fighting for unity within the body of Christ. Unity doesn’t mean we agree about everything, but it means we fight for what matters most. It doesn’t mean uniformity. It means we celebrate our diversity while recognizing that the thing that unites us is so much more important than anything that separates us.

Pastor Craig Groeschel says it like this, “A very divided world needs a unified Church.”

So, is that kind of unity even possible? Jesus thought so. In one of His final prayers before going to the cross to save humanity, He prayed that His followers would be unified. The fact that Jesus prayed it proves that He thought it was possible. And it mattered to Him so much that it was one of His final requests to His Father.

Just look at His bold prayer:

“I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.” John 17:23 NLT

When we experience unity, it’s not just for our benefit. It’s so that the world will see the way we love one another and the way we fight for the mission of Jesus and know that we must have a higher calling. It’s so that others will recognize who God is and how much He cares for them.

So, when the world is chaotic, we don’t despair. We ask God to equip us for our part in bringing His Kingdom to earth, and we get to work. We pray. We serve. We love. We show up. We shine our light.

Why? Because it’s in God we trust.
