Four Gifts of Christmas

DAY 2 OF 4

Frankincense - the Priest’s Gift

The title “Magi” was used in ancient cultures to identify the Priest class.  It is where we get the word Magician.

Magi sought the mysterious. They studied prophecy, dreams, and stars to understand the hidden nature of things.  In other circles, they might be called sages. Daniel the prophet was put in charge of Nebuchadnezzar's Magi, possibly influencing them with messianic prophecies.

Their hunger for mystery led the Magi to Jesus. The same star that guided them to Herod’s palace showed them the way to Emmanuel - God with us. Was this blazing star the same fire that led Moses and the Israelites out of slavery? Was it the same light that signified God’s presence in the temple? Was it the Shekinah Glory? Some scholars think so, but that, too, is a mystery.

Do you also seek the Divine? Do you see creation and long to commune with the Creator? Traditionally, this was done through a mediator - a holy man, magi, sage, or a priest. Jesus is our High Priest, and through His sacrifice, we can boldly approach the mystery of God.

When the Magi came face to face with the total Divinity of Jesus, they gave Frankincense, an incense typically presented by a priest as a sweet fire and smoke offering to God.

The priest’s gift of incense represents prayer. Its smoke-filled offering is a visual reminder of our connection with God through Jesus.

Jesus will forever remain a mystery until you recognize Him as your High Priest, the only mediator between you and God.

About this Plan

Four Gifts of Christmas

When the Magi found Jesus, they honored Him with gifts: Gold for the everlasting King, Frankincense for the Wonderful Counsellor, Myrrh for the Mighty Warrior, and Worship for the Prince of Peace. How will you honor Him today?
