DAY 7 OF 10

SWORD - Before the invention of the gun, the most deadly weapon in close combat was the sword or dagger. Generations of soldiers depended on the supply and skills of the blacksmith to forge swords for battle. Several biblical writers have used the concept of the sword to describe the way the word of God can carry out its work.  The writer of Hebrews goes as far as saying the word of God is ‘sharper than a double edged sword’. Paul encourages believers that part of their preparedness for the spiritual battle is the sword of the Spirit - the word of God. He is saying that God’s word becomes the Spirit’s sword by which the Spirit fights for us. Such militant language sets the scene for understanding the context of our life - it’s a war zone.  The sharpness of God’s word is not only militaristic but also surgical. It cuts away destructive influences. It can penetrate to our heart like no other instrument, making incisions and divisions that save and restore. The sword of the Spirit is not ornamental regalia adorning a military parade. It is the provision of God for active service. As Jesus demonstrated, God’s word repels temptations and when believed and preached, becomes the Spirit’s servant to go deep into human hearts.

Can you recall the last time God’s word went deep into your heart and soul?

About this Plan

Living Word

Hebrews 4:12 says that “the word of God is alive and active”. To emphasise this truth, the Bible itself describes God’s word in various ways. This devotional will take a survey of these various “symbols” and hopefully ignite your passion afresh for the God-breathed scriptures.
