Mission Trip Checkup: A Prescription for Spiritual Health

DAY 4 OF 9

Prayer’s Protective Elements

By donning personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, a mask, robe, face shield, and shoe covers, physicians protect both themselves and their patients. In many ways, prayer is a Christian’s PPE. Because the enemy wants to steal, kill, and destroy all that brings glory to God, vigilance is imperative, not only for you but also for those you’re serving.

While we have access to the full armor of God to defend ourselves (Ephesians 6:13-17), we do not fight alone. Prayer—PPE—is a group effort. Just as Paul requested that the Roman church “strive together with me in your prayers” (Romans 15:30) on his missional journey, we too should recruit the spiritual reinforcement of prayer.

The Christian covered in protective armor will be able to stand against the attacks of the enemy. And when you are not defeated, those who need the gospel and your help will be better served. Prepare your hedge of protection for your sake and for theirs!

Practical considerations:

  • Recruit a trustworthy team of prayer partners. It’s about quality more than quantity.
  • Give your prayer partners an itinerary of your trip.
  • Ask for volunteers to fill daily or weekly prayer slots.
  • Give specific prayer requests (for example, customs, weather, travel mercies, salvation decisions, wisdom, grace with the language barrier, peace for your family while you’re away, etc.) while allowing room for the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
  • Set prayer reminder times on your phone and ask your prayer partners to do the same.
  • Listen when you pray.
  • When you return, let each person know the impact of his or her prayers.
