Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits. Psalm 103:2
Every year, my husband’s company prints and distributes a book of benefits that explains what the company promises to do for the employee for the given year. It explains the company’s position on life insurance, health insurance, vacation days, sick days, and others. “As one of our employees, this year you get . . . ” But each year, the benefits are adjusted. When my husband first started with his company, he got certain benefits; but as the years went by, previous benefits were no longer a given, and new benefits were added.
I like to think of God’s Word like a benefit book for the believer. One major difference is that God’s Book of Benefits never changes. These benefits were given to the Early Church, and they are given to us as well. God is unchanging, and so are His many benefits. No shift in the economy of God has changed the blessings and benefits of knowing and identifying with Christ. No new president or senate or congress gets to vote these benefits away. What makes me sad is that so many believers have no idea what their benefits are.
They are content to sit, watch, and live on a meager existence, when right there under their noses is a treasure of phenomenal worth. We need to change this apathetic attitude, we need to get educated, and we need to know our heritage.
There are so many treasures for us to find. So many nuggets of truth offered to the believer. Get into the Word—all of it. Spend time finding out what your heritage looks like. Read the Word, and listen to the Spirit as He teaches you daily about the benefits already yours.
As a believer in Jesus, you have a tremendous heritage. Take the time to discover what it is! Remember what David wrote in Psalm 103:2, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits.” What sage advice from a man after God’s own heart, a man who recognized his heritage was in God alone.
