Can I Change God’s Mind Through Prayer?

DAY 4 OF 5

Prayer Establishes God’s Will

As Christians, we are given the most powerful gift in the world: prayer in the name of the Son of God. Christ said that His disciples may ask Him for anything they want, and it will be granted to them as they abide in Him. Jesus entrusted us with the power of prayer because He knew that when we spend time in His Word, His character gets imprinted on our hearts and His desires become our desires. This way we know what the will of God is. At the same time, we will never receive anything through prayer that is not part of the will of God for our lives.

The Scripture warns us that we can pray amiss if we ask for something with wrong motives. If we want something to gratify our earthly lusts, God will not give it to us. Perhaps, we want a bigger house to outshine our neighbors, or a better job so that we can brag about our accomplishments. God will not grant us those kinds of requests. We need to know the Bible to pray according to God’s will.

In fact, we can pray Scriptures. We can take a verse from the Bible and turn it into prayer. For example, the Scripture says that God wants us to be in good health and for our lives to prosper just as our souls prosper. These words can be used as a prayer. You can say, “God, I pray that I will have good health as you have promised in Your Word. I also pray that everything I do would prosper and that my spirit and soul would prosper in Your Kingdom.” There are many promises of God recorded in Scripture that can be turned into prayers.

There are also many prayers of men and women of God documented in the Bible. For example, most of David’s psalms are prayers. In some, King David asks God to give him a clean heart that would honor the Lord; in others, he asks for protection from his enemies. David’s son Solomon also prayed to God when he became king after his father. Solomon asked the Lord for wisdom to govern God’s people.

The Bible is full of declarations that we can convert into prayers as well as actual prayers that we can adopt in our daily lives. If we want to pray the will of God, we must know the Word of God. Our prayers will never be amiss if they are based on the Scriptures.
