Day 4: Peace Through God’s Promises

“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise” (Hebrews 10:23).

How can we have faith that God will give us peace? The answer is found in His Word.

Jesus told His disciples that after He was gone, the Father would send the Holy Spirit to be their Advocate (John 14:15). This word is also translated “Comforter” or “Encourager.” On the day of Pentecost, this promise was fulfilled as believers were filled with the Holy Spirit. Peter told the crowd, “And the Father, as he had promised, gave him [Jesus] the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today” (Acts 2:33). 

The Holy Spirit produces peace in our lives (Galatians 5:22). Many people feel as if they cannot have peace if they are not in control, but the apostle Paul wrote, “Letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace” (Romans 8:6). When we submit our thoughts to God, He gives us His peace.

Consider Psalm 23, which was written by David. If anyone had a reason to be afraid, it was him. David was anointed as the next king when he was a young man, but he spent many years being chased by his enemies and treated as an outlaw. So how could he write, “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid” (v. 4)? The answer is that he knew wasn’t alone—“for you are close beside me.” David understood that peace came from his God, not from his circumstances.

Some people assume that becoming a Christian means they will never have any problems ever again. But the Bible never makes that claim. In fact, Jesus said quite the opposite: “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows” (John 16:33a). Some problems are due to poor choices made by ourselves or those around us, but other issues are simply the result of living in a sin-filled world.

In times of crisis, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, confused, and afraid. So how can we have peace? By holding tightly to Jesus’s promise: “Take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33b).

Satan wants us to think that God has forgotten about us, or worse, that He has abandoned us. But the truth is that no matter how bad our situation is, God is always with us. He promises never to leave us (Hebrews 13:5). If we let this truth sink deeply into our hearts, then we can look at the darkest valleys of our lives and have peace. Like David, we can declare, “We will not be afraid.” 

Heavenly Father, You are such a good God. You are always faithful to keep the promises You have given us in Your Word. Thank You for giving us Your peace. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
