[Confident Series] Confident: Things We KnowSample
We Know Our Deepest Identity
We know that the devil is real. The Bible also tells us that the whole world is under his control. He can do with it whatever he wants. However, he cannot do whatever he wants with believers. The Bible declares that Christians can extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one with their shield of faith. Satan shooting flaming arrows at believers implies that there is a distance between us and the evil one. He cannot touch us, but he tries to shoot his arrows at us. These arrows are the lies with which he wants to deceive us. We must use our shield of faith to protect ourselves from his lies.
Our faith comes from a firm knowledge of our new identity. The Bible says that as Christians, we know we are born of God. That is our deepest identity. We are not of the evil one. We are not on the broad road that leads to destruction. We belong to God because of our faith in Jesus Christ.
There is a lot of talk in today’s digital world about identity theft, identity fraud, and mistaken identity. It is important for us to keep our social identity secured. It is even more important for us to be secure in our spiritual identity. We need to know what it means to be a Christian. We need to understand what our lives should look like when we decide to follow Jesus. There are significant changes that need to happen in our hearts and should be reflected in our lives. We need to live new lives, with new habits—lives of discipleship, rather than sin
This happens from the inside out. First, we must know Whose we are. Jesus said that we belong to Him. We live in this world, but we are not of this world. We are not under the sway of the evil one with the rest of the world. Our lives need to be significantly different from the lives of unbelievers. That is how they will know that we are believers. Christ likened His disciples to a lamp that is put on the table and lights the entire house, or to a city that stands on a hill, inviting weary travelers. As Christians, we are to live exemplary lives. We can only do that when we know that we belong to our Heavenly Father. Christians secure in their godly identity can reflect Christ and His glory on a daily basis.
