Gone Fishin’ Three

DAY 2 OF 4

John at the healthcare facility in a wheelchair sitting in the sun

On my way to St. Jude, as I was praying for the Lord’s guidance and open doors, I saw a man sitting in a wheelchair. After two or three steps, I sensed the Lord would have me to go back and share with him, so I did.

John has a knee problem, so he can’t push himself, but he can get around in a wheelchair and he was enjoying relaxing in the sun.

He has four girls and a total of three grandkids, and I would guess he’s about 85–90. Divorced years ago. John felt fine about the kids encouraging him to move in here.

He was kind enough to ask what I was doing here and what I do for a living and about my children and my grandchildren.

While explaining what I do, I mentioned that “I’ve discovered people can think more rightly if they think thoughts like the Bible has them, then we know we’re acting more like God. You know what I mean?” He agreed. I said, “Have you read the Bible much? He said, “Some.”

I showed him a picture of Gina and me this week at Carlsbad. He says he likes it here.

When he thought he needed to go inside because he was getting a little cold, I said, “Sure. Before you head in, can I share two Bible verses with you?” He said, “Of course.”

I shared “I know that you can do all things and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2) and “I will hope continually and praise you yet more and more” from Psalms 71:14. Those were just the verses that came to mind.

He said, “I’d love to visit with you again sometime. It‘s been enjoyable. Come and see me sometime.”

“Thank you, Lord, for answered prayers the day after Thanksgiving. It doesn’t sound to me like John is a follower of Jesus yet for sure. Thank you for allowing me to share the truth with him, though. Move his heart by your Holy Spirit to help him comprehend. Open his mind to his need for the Savior. Lord, what would you have me share with him if I meet with him again? Anything to move him one step closer to you.”

“Run, John, run, the law commands, but gives me neither feet nor hands. ’Tis better news the Gospel brings. It bids me fly, it gives me wings.” — John Bunyan

I am learning to love the people with whom God’s Spirit is prompting me to share his story. I never know what God might already be doing in their lives. The love of Jesus has stirred within me and completely overcome my fears and obstacles to sharing. Praise the Lord!

What an adventure! To God be the glory!

Please say a prayer for John to open his eyes and become more aware God is knocking on the door of his heart.
