Humility: It's Not What You Think

DAY 4 OF 7

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” — James 4:10

There’s a common misconception that you must ignore your needs, your interests, and your potential in order to be humble. You might think you should speak softly, keep your opinions to yourself, and never engage anyone or anything with boldness.

But like we talked about yesterday, that’s simply not true! God put you on this planet for a purpose. In order to fulfill that purpose, you need to know that you’re worthy.

Some of my favorite heroes in the Bible never could have fulfilled their purpose if they weren’t both humble and bold. People like Esther and Moses weren’t afraid to speak up. Esther humbled herself—praying and fasting for days—before breaking the rules, risking her life to do what she was called to do, and saving her people. Moses is described as being the most humble man on earth, and also became one of the most important leaders and liberators in history.

Just because God has called you to a humble life doesn’t mean He’s called you to a small life.

The Book of Psalms says He created your inmost being, and that you’re wonderfully made. That’s not something to be shy about. Being humble is being confident in who you are and recognizing that you were created uniquely by a God who loves you deeply. Your story matters to Him.

Take time today to think about the things that have happened in your life that can’t be attributed to anything but God. Maybe it’s a passion or gift you’ve had since you were little. Maybe your budget actually worked at the end of a month when it shouldn’t have. Maybe it’s a straight-up miracle that’s happened in your life.

Write these things down! They’re worthy of being recorded.
