[Who's your One? Series] On Earth, As It Is In HeavenSample
Reprioritise—the Boat
How good does it feel to be chosen? It feels marvellous, sensational—it makes you feel special and important. You somehow discover that you are part of something bigger and greater than yourself. You may have been chosen to be part of a sports team, you may have joined a music band, or you may have just been accepted by the college of your dreams. Being chosen makes you realise that you are part of something greater than yourself, and changes not only how you see yourself but also how you see the world.
Even if we do not realise it, we are part of a bigger plan—God’s eternal plan. Before the earth and the sky were created, God had already envisioned you and me. Please think about the importance of this statement, consider the implications of being part of God’s eternal plan for our lives and for the lives of those we encounter every day.
The realisation that we are part of God’s eternal plan unveils that our choices matter. We are free to choose, but we are not free from the consequence of our choices. When Jesus called Peter and Andrew, they decided to join Jesus and to become part of God’s eternal plan. The calling completely changed their priorities; they decided that their primary calling was to follow Jesus.
The eternal plan became a priority, but their career served the eternal plan. When Jesus called them, they left the boat—which symbolised their careers—and followed Him. As you read the gospels, you will see that Jesus and the disciples would find themselves in boats many times. The main difference between the time before the calling and what followed their decision had to do with who was in charge of their boat.
The captain of the boat and the one giving the directions is always Jesus. They used their boats to go from one place to another more efficiently, and Jesus also used the boat as a platform to preach. In Matthew chapter 15, Peter walked on water after stepping out of a boat, so one of their life lessons on faith required the use of their boat, their trade, their job, and their career.
When you decide to follow Jesus whole heartily, your priorities change. Your job and career become an opportunity for growth, service, and learning. Usually, we are afraid that God is going to call us to do something that we do not want to do. But I can assure you that if Jesus calls you to do something, you are going to love it. It does not mean that it is going to be easy—there will be challenges, there will be setbacks and trials—but God will be there with you and for you.
About this Plan
We often wonder about our purpose in life. Jesus does not call us because we know how to do everything. Our primary call is to follow Him—ministry is an overflow of our daily walk with God. Jesus chooses those who are willing to walk with Him and be a blessing to those around them. In doing so, God’s will be done on Earth as it is in heaven.
