[Psalms] Why We Need to Sing

DAY 3 OF 7

Music is to Unify

Today we go through the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s—most of our hymns were written in the 1700s and 1800s. But then it all fell off in the 1900s. We did not have as much writing, because in the 1920s there was prohibition, flappers, the Roaring 20s, the speak-easies, the bootleggers, and such. As a result, the Church stiff-armed the world and separated itself from it.

Which brought us to the ‘50s, with rock and roll, and Elvis—who was the “worst thing that would ever happen to the United States of America.” However, if you listen to today’s music, you would like to say: Bring us back Elvis!

In the ‘60s everything got changed around. One can look at U.S. history as: before the ‘60s; after the ‘60s. It was a watershed moment for the U.S. as a culture. The Jesus movement began to happen through the ‘60s and ‘70s, and campfire songs played to one guitar.

Then, into the ‘70s and ‘80s, there was a huge worship war because part of the Church was saying, “We want the 1870s hymns,” and the other part of the church was saying, “No. We want 1970s songs.”

We battled for a while, until now—when the battle is not going on as much anymore. Everybody has preferences still, but it is not quite like it was in the ‘70s and ‘80s. That was the Church history of music.

Music is for the Lord. Music is to unify us. Is it not interesting that Satan has assaulted the family and the music in the church? Because music brings us together—that is why he put it in his crosshairs.

There are four reasons why it is important that we sing to the Lord. The first one is:

It grows our vision of God. He increases and we decrease. Have you decreased anywhere this week? Has your spending on yourself or your thoughts about yourself decreased at all? Has your conversation about yourself, your attention to yourself, or your pride decreased at all so that He can increase?

When we sing praise to the Lord, it increases our vision of Him and it decreases our vision of us.

Lord, You are amazing. You are eternal. I’m just me. I’m singing to You. I want to be humble before You as I sing as heaven is singing right now. Amen

About this Plan

[Psalms] Why We Need to Sing

It does not matter if you are a good singer. Praising is what matters. Not the vocal cords, but the cords of your heart. If you are a bad worshiper, that is a problem. If you do not give God praise, it will affect your way of life. Praise is about your heart before the Lord of singing to God, not just singing about God.
