Luke Experience The Beginning Of Jesus’ Ministry

DAY 3 OF 7

Convicted to Change

Few things disturb my life more than my conscience. I hear a sermon, read a book, or read the Scriptures, and I am convicted to change. It is for this reason that the Scriptures say that God’s Word will not return to him empty, but will accomplish what God desires and will achieve the purpose for which he sent it. God’s Word has the power of convincing us to change.

When Gabriel, the angel, gave Mary and Zechariah a word from God, promising each the miracle of a baby, that word did not return to God empty. They both received their miracle, and their hearts were changed.

Zechariah’s son, John the Baptist, had the special job, given by God, of preparing the way for Jesus.

When crowds came to be baptized, John the Baptist preached, “Do something to show that you really have given up your sins” (Luke 3:8). His listeners were deeply moved and convicted. “What should we do?”—they asked (3:10). The answer was simple. “If you have two coats, give one to someone who doesn’t have any. If you have food, share it with someone else” (3:11).

The hated tax collectors were told, “Don’t make people pay more than they owe” (3:13). They were to do their work ethically. The soldiers were told, “Don’t force people to pay money to make you leave them alone. Be satisfied with your pay” (3:14). True change was more than outward action; it was the result of a changed heart.

John’s words penetrated the heart of their greed. They could not serve God obediently until their hearts were changed, and then their actions would follow. When we invite God into our lives, he convicts us about obedience. He first wants us to change whatever does not meet the test of honesty, integrity, and compassion. It may mean we have to change the way we conduct ourselves at work or with our family. As we change, others will see what God has done in our lives and seek change in their own lives.

Reflect

Do you recognize when the Holy Spirit convicts you of sin? How do you respond?

Pray

Lord, show me the error of my ways and help me to change. Ask God to change your heart and give you the courage to lead a Spirit-filled life.

Respond

Do you have clothes in your closet that you are not using? Consider donating them.

Lord, let my actions speak louder than my words!
