The Good Fight

DAY 8 OF 10

Day 8 - ASK:

There is an amazing story in the Bible where a woman named Aksah marries a man named Othniel. On the way home from their honeymoon, Othniel and Aksah have a discussion – in fact, it may be their first argument as a married couple. Aksah wants her husband to ask her father, Caleb, for the land he had already gifted them. Being a new son-in-law, he is not keen to do this so early in their marriage. I’m sure you can understand his apprehension – he wants to build rapport and trust with his new father-in-law!

Aksah, we can assume she was a little annoyed, dismounts her donkey and approaches her father herself – boldly asking him for more. Caleb grants her request and they depart owning the existing land as well as some new territory, which includes springs of water.

Now, that’s an awesome gift to start any married life together.

What was the difference between Othniel and Aksah? What was it that made her confident to request more, but him sheepish? The difference was in how well they knew the father. Othniel was apprehensive because he didn’t grasp Caleb’s love for them, Aksah was happy to make the extra request because she knew her father loves her.

This is a crucial lesson for us and how we approach God. Are we nervous and unsure of His love, or confident knowing that He wants to pour out blessing on us? How often do we have what God has given us, such as salvation, forgiveness, freedom from sin, a promise or a prophecy fulfilled, and settle when we're there? Unsure and unwilling whether we can come to God and ask for more. God wants you to know, you can come boldly before Him and ASK.

Perhaps you’ve become content, and settled for what God has provided. You can come to Him and ask again. He has never put a limit on asking him for more.

How well do you know the Father? God says, “Come, ask of Me, I can provide.” He is Jehovah Jireh, our provider. God isn’t going to say, I saved you, that’s enough – He is a God of abundance, He always has more. We are His children, we are invited and encouraged to approach him boldly and to ask Him for what we need.

Make it personal:

Where in your life have you settled for status quo and need to increase your ask?

Read Matthew 7:7-11. Knowing this about God, how will you approach Him today?
