[Acts Inspiration For Transformation Series] The Unstoppable Force Of The GospelSample
Miracle at Midnight
Pastor Juan Valdez
In my Christian walk, I have found that one of the most challenging things to do is to trust God in the darkest moments. When things do not go the way we expect them to or when troubles and suffering come our way, it is very common for us to be discouraged or complain.
Today’s reading is a perfect example of the exact opposite behavior. By the power of God, Paul set free a woman possessed by an evil spirit. The people who had made money from her fortune-telling were furious and brought Paul and Silas before the city officials, who seized, beat, and imprisoned them.
The jailer of this prison soon discovered that these men were not like the rest of the prisoners. Who prays and sings hymns while locked up in chains in a deep, dark cell? Who praises God so intensely that it makes the power of God come down and manifest in an earthquake that breaks shackles and opens prison doors? Moreover, who remains in jail after having the perfect opportunity to escape? Paul and Silas.
Complaining, feeling discouraged, and running away from prison would have been the common and natural reaction. Paul and Silas chose to stay, prevented the jailer from killing himself (which could have been the outcome since jailers were killed if their prisoners escaped), and shared the good news of Jesus with this man and his entire household.
This dark moment in the lives of Paul and Silas turned out to be the brightest in the life of the jailer and his family. Only God can do that!
Respond
Can you find the courage to continually praise the Lord and lift your prayers, trusting God in your “midnights”? His presence will not only become present for you; others can and will be delivered and set free through your demonstrated faith in God. We can rest secure in his plan for our lives and ready to share the gospel even amid trouble.
