Daily Bible Reading — Sustained By God’s Word Of Hope

DAY 4 OF 30

April 4

Introduction

Today’s reading begins with a parable that is a follow-up to the one from yesterday’s reading (Luke 14:7-14). In yesterday’s reading, Jesus told his host that, when giving a feast, one should “invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind” (14:13). In today’s reading, Jesus offers another parable about a great feast. The reading concludes with Jesus describing the type of commitment that is required to be his disciple.

Today’s Scripture: Luke 14:27 (GNT)

[Jesus said:] “Those who do not carry their own cross and come after me cannot be my disciples.”

Today’s Reading

Luke 14:15-35

Reflect

In the parable of the great feast, what excuses did the guests give for not attending? What did the master instruct his servant to do? The Roman world in Jesus’s day required that one’s primary allegiance was to the state. How do Jesus’s words in 14:25-33 counter this type of allegiance? Is there anything in your life that hinders you from committing your life to Jesus?

Pray

Lord Jesus, thank you for inviting me to feast in your kingdom. I want to be your disciple, and I commit my life to following your teachings. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

Prayer Concern

Tomorrow’s Reading

Luke 15:1-10: Jesus teaches about how God cares for those who are lost.
