Social Myths Or Spiritual Truths - Trust Fall Series

DAY 1 OF 5

Clever Myths or Eternal Truths

Are you acquainted with anyone who says, “I want to live my life according to a cleverly contrived myth”? Most of us would answer “no” to that question. Nevertheless, in his second epistle, the apostle Peter wrote to us, “We did not follow cleverly contrived myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:16)

With just a couple of lines, the apostle Peter gives us a challenge, a significant question each of us has to make to ourselves: Do we live by cleverly contrived myths or by eternal truths?

What is Peter talking about? Why would anyone guide his own life according to a cleverly contrived myth? I think what happens is not that we choose to live by myths, but instead that we succumb to them because they are strong and convincing. Their influence is so pervasive that it is just a matter of time before we begin to live by them instead of by the eternal truths of God’s Word. One way this can happen is this: in America we watch an average of seven hours a day on some kind of screen, and very few of us read the Bible. Daily, we consume seven hours of cleverly contrived myths and very little of eternal truths.

Certainly we are not talking about Greek mythology here, or the Norse gods, or anything like that. We are talking about cleverly defined myths that have been in circulation in our culture for years. They have come to shape our perspective, our pleasure, our purpose.

Have you felt it? After years of getting seven hours of myths and little or nothing of the Word, we can feel the shift in our minds and hearts. And we can see it in the culture too. Now it’s the time to challenge ourselves: “Are we following cleverly devised myths or eternal truths?”

This reading plan is based on the Trust Fall series preached by pastor Gregg Matte. To watch the whole sermon this plan was taken from please follow this link: https://houstonsfirst.org/the-loop/message/part-1-social-myths-or-spiritual-truths

About this Plan

Social Myths Or Spiritual Truths - Trust Fall Series

In the Trust Fall series, Pastor Gregg Matte takes us on a passage-by-passage journey through the Second Epistle of the Apostle Peter. The purpose of this series is to show us that we can fall back with confidence into our God’s safe arms. This fifth plan of the series unravels the clever myths that could shape our perspective, purpose, what we expect from life and our response to God and His word.
