Lies Moms Believe: And the Truth That Sets Them Free

DAY 5 OF 5

What You Need To Do To Help Your Daughter Live In Freedom

I have a mother who loves her Bible and prays faithfully. When I was eight years old, she handed me my first daily devotional for children. It was the beginning of a life-long love of reading my Bible and soaking in Truth.

As I completed research for Lies Girls Believe, I was quite sad to discover how unusual it was for my mom to do that.

30% of daughters have private prayer time regularly

48% of daughters do not have a private prayer time

The remaining percent of mothers were not sure if their daughters had devos or not.

While the majority of moms—seventy percent—were having their own private prayer time, they were not helping their 8-12 year old daughters develop the skill.

Let me say this simply: read your Bible and teach your daughter to read hers. In Lies Girls Believe, I used these words to explain to your daughter the importance of reading her Bible. In doing so, you’ll be putting Truth on her.

Lots of Bible verses tell us to “put on” things, like humility, righteousness, and love. Sure, you don’t actually put your arms through it and put it on your body, but maybe you think to yourself: “I’m going to pick up the Truth today and wear it! I’m going to cover myself with kindness and love.”

These things are spiritual characteristics that can be worn just like a pair of your favorite jeans or a team jersey! (You can’t touch them or feel them, but I think you can kind of “see” when someone wears those things!) One of the things we can “put on” is the belt of Truth.

“Stand up and do not be moved.

Wear a belt of truth around your body.” (Ephesians 6:14)

When the Apostle Paul wrote this Bible verse, he also encouraged Christians to wear a bunch of other stuff like:

• the breastplate of righteousness

• shoes of peace

• the helmet of salvation

• the shield of faith

• the sword of the Spirit, or the Word of God

We call all these things the armor of God, and they’re all pretty important for Christians to “put on.” But the “belt of Truth” is the very first thing Paul mentions. Why?

Well, back when Paul wrote the verses, Roman soldiers wore a belt that was a lot different from the simple leather straps you and I wear today.

It was a thick, heavy band made out of leather and metal, with a big protective piece that hung down in the front of it. The belt held the soldier’s sword and other weapons in place.

Your belt of Truth holds everything else in place too. It helps you make right choices. It keeps you living in peace. It bolsters your faith. You get the idea!!! It’s really important that you put it on.

How do you do that?

I’m glad you asked. The answer is pretty simple.

You think about Truth EVERY DAY!

I like to do this first thing in the morning by reading my Bible and writing down key verses in a journal. You may find a favorite devotional book you enjoy, or maybe you’d rather have family devotions or mother/daughter devos. Maybe you will start a collection of your favorite Bible verses and tape them to your bedroom wall. It doesn’t matter how you do it, but get into the Bible every single day! Each time you do, you are “putting on” the very important belt of Truth.

Putting your belt of Truth on can transform both you and your daughter.

Help the girl you love walk in freedom by equipping her with the Truth. Lies Girl Believe  and A Mom’s Guide to Lies Girls Believe is your tool to come alongside your daughter in the fight against the lies the world is telling her.
