Ezekiel 34

Irresponsible Shepherds
1And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God to the shepherds: #Jer. 23:1; Ezek. 22:25; Mic. 3:1–3, 11; Zech. 11:17“Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? 3#Is. 56:11; Zech. 11:16You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you #Ezek. 33:25, 26; Mic. 3:1–3; Zech. 11:5slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock. 4#Zech. 11:16The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor #Matt. 9:36; 10:16; 18:12, 13; Luke 15:4sought what was lost; but with #(1 Pet. 5:3)force and cruelty you have ruled them. 5#Ezek. 33:21So they were #Num. 27:17; 1 Kin. 22:17; Jer. 10:21; Matt. 9:36; Mark 6:34scattered because there was no shepherd; #Is. 56:9; Jer. 12:9and they became food for all the beasts of the field when they were scattered. 6My sheep #Jer. 40:11, 12; 50:6; Ezek. 7:16; 1 Pet. 2:25wandered through all the mountains, and on every high hill; yes, My flock was scattered over the whole face of the earth, and no one was seeking or searching for them.”
7‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 8“As I live,” says the Lord God, “surely because My flock became a prey, and My flock #Ezek. 34:5, 6became food for every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, nor did My shepherds search for My flock, #Ezek. 34:2, 10but the shepherds fed themselves and did not feed My flock”— 9therefore, O shepherds, hear the word of the Lord! 10Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am #Jer. 21:13; 52:24–27; Ezek. 5:8; 13:8; Zech. 10:3against the shepherds, and #Ezek. 3:18; Heb. 13:17I will require My flock at their hand; I will cause them to cease feeding the sheep, and the shepherds shall #Ezek. 34:2, 8feed themselves no more; for I will #Ps. 72:12–14; Ezek. 13:23deliver My flock from their mouths, that they may no longer be food for them.”
God, the True Shepherd
11‘For thus says the Lord God: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. 12As a #Jer. 31:10shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on #Jer. 13:16; Ezek. 30:3; Joel 2:2a cloudy and dark day. 13And #Is. 65:9, 10; Jer. 23:3; Ezek. 11:17; 20:41; 28:25; 36:24; 37:21, 22I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land; I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, in the valleys and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14#Ps. 23:2; Jer. 3:15; (John 10:9)I will feed them in good pasture, and their fold shall be on the high mountains of Israel. #Jer. 33:12There they shall lie down in a good fold and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15I will feed My flock, and I will make them lie down,” says the Lord God. 16#Is. 40:11; Mic. 4:6; (Matt. 18:11; Mark 2:17; Luke 5:32)“I will seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy #Is. 10:16; Amos 4:1the fat and the strong, and feed them #Jer. 10:24in judgment.”
17‘And as for you, O My flock, thus says the Lord God: #Ezek. 20:37; Mal. 4:1; (Matt. 25:32)“Behold, I shall judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and goats. 18Is it too little for you to have eaten up the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the residue of your pasture—and to have drunk of the clear waters, that you must foul the residue with your feet? 19And as for My flock, they eat what you have trampled with your feet, and they drink what you have fouled with your feet.”
20‘Therefore thus says the Lord God to them: #Ezek. 34:17“Behold, I Myself will judge between the fat and the lean sheep. 21Because you have pushed with side and shoulder, butted all the weak ones with your horns, and scattered them abroad, 22therefore I will save My flock, and they shall no longer be a prey; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23I will establish one #(Is. 40:11; Jer. 23:4, 5); Hos. 1:11; (John 10:11; Heb. 13:20; 1 Pet. 2:25; 5:4)shepherd over them, and he shall feed them—#Jer. 30:9; Ezek. 37:24; Hos. 3:5My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24And #Ex. 29:45; Ezek. 37:25I, the Lord, will be their God, and My servant David #Is. 55:3; Jer. 30:9; Ezek. 37:24, 25; Hos. 3:5a prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken.
25#Ezek. 37:26“I will make a covenant of peace with them, and #Lev. 26:6; Job 5:22, 23; Is. 11:6–9; Hos. 2:18cause wild beasts to cease from the land; and they #Jer. 23:6will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. 26I will make them and the places all around #Is. 56:7My hill #Gen. 12:2; Is. 19:24; Zech. 8:13a blessing; and I will #Lev. 26:4cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be #Ps. 68:9showers of blessing. 27Then #Lev. 26:4; Ps. 85:12; Is. 4:2the trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase. They shall be safe in their land; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have #Lev. 26:13; Is. 52:2, 3; Jer. 2:20broken the bands of their yoke and delivered them from the hand of those who #Jer. 25:14enslaved them. 28And they shall no longer be a prey for the nations, nor shall beasts of the land devour them; but #Jer. 30:10; Ezek. 39:26they shall dwell safely, and no one shall make them afraid. 29I will raise up for them a #(Is. 11:1)garden of renown, and they shall #Ezek. 36:29no longer be consumed with hunger in the land, #Ezek. 36:3, 6, 15nor bear the shame of the Gentiles anymore. 30Thus they shall know that #Ezek. 34:24I, the Lord their God, am with them, and they, the house of Israel, are #Ps. 46:7, 11; Ezek. 14:11; 36:28My people,” says the Lord God.’
31“You are My #Ps. 100:3; Jer. 23:1; (John 10:11)flock, the flock of My pasture; you are men, and I am your God,” says the Lord God.
