The Legacy Journey

DAY 26 OF 31

Generational Legacy

Legacies that outlive you are not about materialism. They aren’t about building wealth for your own benefit or creating wealth so your children will never have to work again. They’re about a steady, lifelong process and teaching your kids to handle money God’s way because that’s your family’s calling.

Even more important, passing generational wealth for God’s work is biblical. The Bible provides several examples of families who built and managed wealth for God’s glory.

For example, the Bible says that David was a man after God’s own heart, and one of his greatest desires was to build a temple for God in Jerusalem. But the Lord decided Solomon, David’s son, would build it instead.

So, what did David do? First Chronicles 29 tells us that he passed his personal wealth—an enormous fortune—to Solomon for the temple project. In fact, one economist has estimated that David’s legacy would be worth at least $21 billion in today’s dollars.

Sometimes we think of David as a shepherd with a harp or a young warrior with a slingshot. But David the king was a billionaire! He was the Bill Gates or the Warren Buffet of his day. And he passed that wealth to his son, who used that money to build a temple that pointed the world toward God!

That’s how it’s supposed to work. Generational legacies call families to manage money for God’s glory now and in the future. The responsibility doesn’t die with the head of the household; it’s passed to the next generation.

That demands a different level of stewardship—a level that expands the kingdom of God from generation to generation. Begin planning how you will make the generational handoff in your family and begin preparing your family members for that transition. That’s part of your responsibility if you’re going to build a legacy that outlives you.

Creating a generational legacy takes planning and preparation. The Legacy Journey will give you a deeper understanding of investing, basic estate planning, safeguarding your family, and discovering the keys to generational wealth and true generosity.
