Daily Encouragement

DAY 18 OF 366

So Moses remonstrates with God. Everything seemed to be going wrong and his mission appeared to be doomed to failure. “Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all” (Ex. 5:23). To go in the Lord’s name is no guarantee of immediate success. The missionary William Carey wrote from India in 1799, “At no time have the affairs of the Mission appeared more gloomy. No one has appeared to be awakened this year, or even to have been stirred in the least degree.”

The wise servant will not seek to justify himself before men, nor turn in upon himself and yield to discouragement. Loyalty to the Lord will result in a disciplined reticence before men, but in God’s presence he can pour out his heart. There he will find reassurance, as God reminds him of who he is (“I am the Lord”), of his power (“my mighty hand”) and of his sure promises (“my covenant”) (Ex. 6:1-5).

The strength of the servant lies in his unwavering conviction that the Lord has sent him. There may be many questions about the situation but none about the sending: “You sent me.”
