Mothers of the Bible

DAY 16 OF 30

The Proverbs 31 Mom: Centering Life on God

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. —Proverbs 31:28, NIV

Do you ever lie awake at night, anxious about your children’s future? I know I do. Questions often flood my mind: Will they make wise choices? Will they follow God? Am I doing enough to prepare them for what lies ahead? The weight of our motherly duties can feel suffocating at times. But, in the Bible, God gently reminds us of one simple truth: Their future isn’t in our hands—it’s in his. Our job isn’t to control every detail but to guide them faithfully while trusting that he’s got this.

The Proverbs 31 mom exemplifies a life that overflows with hard work and wisdom, and verse 28 reveals the result of her faithfulness: “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her” (NIV). While this verse reflects the honor she receives from her family, it’s rooted in her confidence in God, which shapes her approach to motherhood and her outlook on the future.

One of the most beautiful qualities of the Proverbs 31 mom is found in verse 25: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come” (NIV). She does not worry about tomorrow but, rather, welcomes it with open hands. However, her confidence in what lies ahead is not based on her own abilities: It’s based on her faith in God’s sovereignty. She knows that her strength and wisdom come from him, enabling her to love and lead her family well.

As moms, we often carry the weight of our children’s futures on our shoulders. But when we center our lives on God, we can release that burden. As you rely on God, he will use your faithfulness to shape your children’s lives with a greater purpose than you could have ever hoped for them.

Challenge: If the fear of the future has also been weighing on your heart, take time today to surrender it to God. Write down your concerns in a prayer journal and ask him for guidance and discernment. Then, choose one way that you can model godly wisdom and diligence for your children like the Proverbs 31 mom—whether it’s by praying together as a family, reading your Bible daily or teaching your kids about the power of forgiveness.
